Our mission “Rescue the Rhine”

With a length of 1,320 km, including 865 km in Germany, the Rhine is one of the most important waterways in Europe. It is also one of the oldest rivers, being more than 25 million years old. With the start of the first extreme weather events in 2018, 2022 and now also 2023, it can be stated that the Rhine is extremely threatened. In addition to microplastics, drug residues and fertilizer contamination, it is primarily the low water levels that cause problems for commercial and recreational shipping with all the subsequent symptoms. We at Marina Düsseldorf have been managing Düsseldorf's media harbor as a private company for 48 years. The effects of climate change not only affect our existence, but also that of entire sectors of the economy.

We have therefore decided to use our “Rescue the Rhine” campaign to develop practical measures and product solutions that green large areas of water in the area of “blue-green infrastructure” in order to secure biological diversity and the media harbor, as well as other ports to make people climate resilient and to promote water protection.
